July 31, 2005

I had a meeting with one of the workforce commission ladies to go over my job searches. Also met with a vet rep and set up an appointment for Tuesday.

So it's been a nice weekend. The husband came home a little early on Friday. He decided to do some work on his exterior building (shock and amazement!) and has actually made some real progress.

My Mom's birthday was yesterday and she called first thing in the morning since she's impatient. She asked me to visit (again) since I have nothing to worry about in Texas other than a possible job interview. I was encouraged to go by my husband, if only for a few days - perhaps an extended weekend.

I've decided I have some of the strangest cats in existence. One of them drools whenever he's happy and the other has a serious foot fetish. The drooler is also a "love nibbler," meaning he'll take bites out of your nose when you're petting him. The foot fetish kitty goes bonkers whenever she sees someone wiggle their toes.

We took the dog on her second day of swimming. Since I had her shaved early in the week, it was a little different for her this time. She did pretty well although it seemed like she got tired more quickly this time.

Tonight we had a fantastic dinner at La Madeleine, as usual. Trying to cut down on the calorie intake so I followed the husband's example and ate only half of the serving. Now I just have to be a good girl tomorrow.

For my political bent of the week: PAUL HACKETT FOR CONGRESS - OH02!!!!

July 28, 2005

I had to attend hated orientation for unemployment this morning. Since I still consider myself a recent arrival to town, I didn't have a very good idea where the building was located. I managed to find it about twenty minutes late. Thankfully the gentleman in charge told me I would still get credit for the class and to let him know if I had any questions.

I met Lance, a recently unemployed gaming programmer. He was reading up on C# databases because he said he needed to have a backup in case he wasn't able to find another job soon. I wish him the best of luck and hope he hears from Midway!!!

I was able to get my resume in to the company with the formerly overflowed mailbox. I talked to the HR person briefly. I may have a to call again in a few days just to check up on the job position.

Last night was a sponsored Happy Hour (HH) at a nearby pub/grill. There were people I hadn't talked to in almost two months. I had a lot of hair cut off recently so I was getting some funny looks from folks I hadn't seen in awhile. It was great to chat with the folks to find out how they were doing and also got a possible job lead from a good friend. Here's hoping that works!!

I have to vacate the PC so the other half can update his training logs. Triathlon athletes are a committed bunch..or they should be!

By the way, I finished "In Her Shoes" today and found it a great read...for anyone who's interested.

So today it begins.... 26 Jul 05

I've decided to keep my own blog after reading with interest on others' personal and political lives. My life isn't all that interesting, but I have so many different thoughts and observances about the world and lives around me that I figure I may as well add to the rest of the internet drivel. :)

A little background:

I'm a recently unemployed USAF veteran in the red state of Texas (formerly of PA). My husband and I bought our first home together a few months ago. I'm a somewhat moderate liberal (yes, I put the evil 7-letter word in my blog!) so I occasionally catch some flak for my beliefs. I have two wonderful step-children - only one of whom actually visits with us regularly. I also have four nieces and two nephews, all on my husband's side. My sister and her husband have decided to forgo having children, much to my mother's dissatisfaction.

So today in the soup:

I started my morning by turning on Judge Joe Brown. I usually keep the channel on for Texas Justice and Judge Judy. I'll watch Divorce Court if the story sounds pathetic enough. My ultimate favorite though, is Judge Hatchett. I don't know what it is about these courtroom "dramas" but I find them highly amusing and somewhat disturbing at the same time. I had to go on hiatus for a few days when I caught myself telling stories by starting out, "Well see, what happened wuz.." Sad state of affairs for our nation when this is an acceptable form of conversation.

I didn't do much else. I was supposed to go to my first planning meeting for a major fund-raising event this afternoon but the event coordinator called to cancel. Bummer.

I did get an email from a job recruiter. Unfortunately when I finally talked to the HR Rep, it was for a job that is way below my qualifications. Boo! I was lucky enough to find another position which of course I couldn't even apply for since the HR mailbox was overflowing. I left a message and I'll try again in the morning so here's wishing for luck...*clink*

The great news is I heard from a dear friend who's just moved back to Texas. We talked about getting together soon for drinks and to reminisce. Her husband is deployed - thankfully not in the war zone, but close enough.

I'm in the midst of reading a great book by Jennifer Weiner called "In Her Shoes" I think I read about it in "Marie Claire" but I can't be sure. I also just finished "Sellevision" by Augusten Burrows. I have a few other Burrows books to read and because I enjoyed the dry sarcastic wit of Sellevision I feel sure that I shall enjoy immensely.

It's about time for me to hit the hay so I can call about the job opportunity early enough in the morning to head off all of the other folks sure to drive the HR Rep crazy. Happy reading!
